Follow up on “Pure iPod Speculation” — January 9, 2007
So, today, according to the rumor sites, was the release of the long-rumored wide-screen iPod, possibly the “true” video iPod also. But is it really an iPod? NO!
It’s a phone…it is even called iPhone, has main features of a phone, and Apple even stated that they’re trying to revolutionize the phone market. It is merely a phone with iPod capability. Doesn’t this sound familiar to something I predicted in a previous posting about 3 months ago? I was right on the money with my personal iPod speculation….except for the inclusion of a hard disk drive. So, does this mean I’ll get an iPhone…probably not. If there were a big enough hard drive I would get it in a heart beat, (come June 2007 of course) however, since the capacities are a whimpy 4GB and 8GB, this is unacceptable. Even with the 8GB model you can fit maybe a movie a couple songs, a couple photos, and your contacts on there and whammo – it’s full. Additionally, who knows how much of that space is being used by the, apparently, lite version of OSX and other apps on there. What about the rest of the songs/movies/etc that you may have? Well, you’re hosed. The last thing I want to be is hosed. So, if I were to get the iPhone, which is doubtful since it doesn’t replace my current phone AND iPod, I would use it almost exclusively as a phone and not any iPod purposes. This would inherently force me to buy and iPod to satisfy my needs. Maybe that is Apple’s plan…although it is not typical of them.
Don’t get me wrong…I love the iPhone, the usability, the features etc…I just can’t stand the storage capacity. My heart felt like it was broken when they said 4GB and 8GB (and available in June 2007). In the future it is entirely possible that Apple will include a hard drive in future versions of this. That would be kickin’. Then, as above and satisfying my minimum iPod requirements, I’d get one.
Funny how I seemed to be the only one who predicted the iPhone and wide-screen iPod to be the same device. Although some of the specs were wrong, I feel that I successfully predicted this.
Where does this lead me with my record of predicting rumors: 2/1 (win on 2, lost on 1).
