Caved In — March 5, 2007
Well, on Friday (3/2/07) I caved in. Upon reading rumors and generally agreeing that new iPods won’t be out until 4-6 months (or possibly longer) from now I decided to go out and get a new iPod. I mean, come on; my 3Gen iPod was stolen in May ’06. So, essentially come the release of the next iPod it would be a year or more since mine was stolen. When my 3Gen iPod was stolen I had no intention of waiting that long. Anyhow, the next day before a Saturday work session, I went out to Pentagon City Mall and bought an 80GB 5Gen (sometimes referred to a 5.5Gen) iPod. I have absolutely no regrets. With me riding the metro more often these days, and me previously still missing my iPod days, my desire to get one became too great to bear.
For once I find my self needing to find additional material to put on it just so I use the iPod to its fullest potential. No problems though, I’ll just have to encode the crap load of movies I have to address that issue. I also need to finish getting album artwork for all the albums I have. Of the 73.4GB free (not 80GB due to formatting and the metric equivalence of 1GB) I so far have used 36.9GB. The 36.9GB used is across 7,380 songs (finally my whole iTunes library), 1115 photos (whole iPhoto library also), a not so whopping, 4 video’s, and all of my contacts and calendars. I think I want to get some additional games for this to, like Ms. Pac-man. I also got one of those silicon cases for my iPod. The main reason I decided to get a case like that is because I saw someone once take their iPod out of their case, and it didn’t even look like it was touched.
One thing I thought was strange about this Gen of iPod is that it is only intended for USB hook-up to a computer. If you connect it using firewire the iPod reports that the connection is not supported. However, you can still connect it using firewire to an AC adapter (left over from my 3Gen iPod). Meanwhile, Jenn’s 3Gen iPod will connect to a computer using firewire or USB, but it will only receive a charge (with the data connection) via the firewire hook-up. I assume that a USB AC adapter would provide a charge for Jenn’s iPod, but I don’t know for sure since I don’t have one.
